Today we review a band that is quickly gaining a massive following all across North America. The Vancouver, British Columbia based Mother Mother , a five member indie rock group, released its second album O My Heart on September 16th, 2008. The band has put a great effort into their second album, and it shows in the twelve song creation. From start to finish, the album features well produced tracks that provide easy listening and showcase the bands outstanding vocals and unique sound.
O My Heart has received national acclaim since its release finding the top five for ITunes Canada in both Canadian Album of the Year (#3) and Overall Album of the Year (#5). The track Body of Years was the ITunes Single of the Week in October, 2008. The song features smooth sounding vocals that are littered throughout the album; it has received national praise netting the band a CBC-Radio award for Best Vocals and ranked within ITunes for Best Song of the Year (#31).
Despite getting the most recognition, I don’t believe Body of Years is even one of the top three songs on the album. There is no doubt that it’s a very solid track but when you dig deeper and find gems like Wisdom, Wrecking Ball and O My Heart, it seems that the band has much more to offer the listener then a few solid tracks surrounded by filler. O My Heart provides the listener with an edgy, fast paced track while Wisdom and Wrecking Ball both feature some really catchy sounds that are sure to hook the listener in. Even after these songs, there is still plenty left over for the listener, something that is bound to give this album tons of lasting power past the first listen, it gets better and better every time you play it.
Overall, O My Heart, the second album by Vancouver based Mother Mother is an excellent album. It really is up to the listener to find and identify their personal favourites because the album, top to bottom, is filled with quality. Despite the recognition that the band has received for its work, it probably still hasn’t gotten it’s due for what they have released, O My Heart is one of the better albums released in the past year and the band will have to really shine to outperform themselves for their third album. If you are looking for some music that is easy on the ears, this album is a must have, it has the ability to reach to all listeners.
Mother Mother is touring Canadian festivals all throughout the summer and will be moving all over the United States for a tour beginning in the middle of August. The band has a reputation for putting on a great live show so it figures to be quality times watching them perform. Check the band out and when they may be reaching you at www.mothermothersite.com
